Learning Block 1: From Dispute to Connection: Proactive Strategies for IEP Conflict Resolution and Family Partnership
Do families enter IEP meetings feeling defensive, unheard, or overwhelmed? This no-cost, virtual learning block focuses on helping PreK–12 school building administrators (principals, assistant principals) shift the dynamic by building stronger partnerships with families and advocates.
Participants will explore common sources of tension in IEP meetings, gain a clearer understanding of procedural safeguards, and learn proactive strategies for de-escalation. Through real-world examples and practical tools, you'll leave better equipped to transform disputes into meaningful dialogue - building trust, fostering collaboration, and keeping the focus on student success.
In this learning block, you'll learn how to:
- Connect conflict resolution to IDEA by reinforcing the importance of procedural safeguards and meaningful family engagement.
- Strengthen partnerships by supporting families’ understanding of their rights and the role of advocates in supporting the families’ decision-making and participation in the IEP process.
- Identify common sources of conflict and barriers to effective communication and collaboration in the development and implementation of the IEP.
- Develop proactive strategies to prevent and de-escalate disputes, including when and how to engage advocates to support productive dialogue.
