Module: Laying the Foundation for Family Engagement Before and During the IEP Referral Process

This self-paced module helps school leaders understand their role in engaging families early in the special education process. Learners will examine IDEA requirements for family participation during referral, evaluation, and eligibility determination, and learn practical strategies for building trust, communicating clearly, and creating schoolwide systems that ensure meaningful family involvement. The module emphasizes that effective family engagement goes beyond compliance; it’s a leadership practice that supports effective decision-making and strengthens partnerships that benefit students with disabilities.
